Handicraft centre to train young & budding artisans

The children of Bahrain will have to wait till next year to learn the interesting and amazing art and craft of the Middle East. Traditional handicraft of region will be taught in the region for the first time under the expansion plan of Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre.

The construction of new centre will get over by next year, where various courses will be taught to the young and aspiring craftsmen. The workshops will teach the students chessboard making, basket weaving, miniature dhow building and traditional doll making.

Along with instructors from Morocco and Tunisia, the authorities at Al Jasra are even planning to rope in local artisans for teaching the rare craft that has been passed on to them by their ancestors.

In this way the Moroccan and Tunisian handicraft will also get promoted among the art appreciators of Bahrain.

Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre was launched in 1990 with an aim to promote and preserve the traditional craft of the nation by educating the young and talented children. At present only summer courses are held at the centre that takes not more than 60 students.

However, once the new building comes into existence next year the authorities are planning to hold classes with the capacity of more than 100 students at a time.
